Favourite Student-Friendly Cookery Books

Hello there!

I have been at uni for a year now and even though I study a food course I can be a bit lazy or lose motivation cooking for myself everyday. Something I have found is that easy to follow and recipe books that don't have too many ingredients are great for students or just anyone who doesn't have much time for cooking or the money for fancy ingredients. These are my top 5 recipe books that student-friendly*. Enjoy!

My Top 5 Favourite Student-Friendly Cookery Books

5). Fast, Fresh and Easy Food - Lorraine Pascale

I have always really liked Lorraine Pascale's cooking style since it is always quite simple and leans towards healthy eating which is very important among student eating habits since many neglect that they need lots of vitamins and minerals still. This recipe book is one of my favourites out of the many books Lorraine has published due to it containing fairly quick recipes.

However, the reason this has been rated no.5 is due to lots of ingredients being needed for some of the recipes. While they are fairly quick to make, they require ingredients which may be out of budget to a student. In addition, most of the recipes are aimed at families since they serve about 4 people. Nonetheless, it is a great book with a variety of recipes and is split clearly into different meals.

4). Veganeasy!: Delicious Food in 5 Ingredients - Denise Smart

This is a great book for students who are on a really strict budget since all the recipes are made with only 5 ingredients. You are required to have the basics which are found in most people's cupboards. Whilst this book is vegan, it isn't aimed at just vegans since many of the dishes can be adapted so that you can use non-vegan ingredients if you prefer, for example swapping plant milks to cows milk. Another reason this book is ideal for students is that most of the recipes serve 2 people so they can easily be halved or great for cooking with a flatmate. I like that there is a variety of different cuisines including in this dish but it may not always appeal those who are big meat-eaters since some recipes do include vegan ingredients like tofu. Still a good cook to inspire students to cook dishes on a budget with few ingredients.

3). 4 Ingredients Student Cookbook - Hamlyn

This is very similar to the book above but it isn't vegan and instead of being 5 ingredient recipes, it is 4 ingredient recipes. It has a similar concept as you have basic ingredients then more specific ones for each recipe. I think this book is great since the recipes are all fairly familiar to students and can make you feel at home. The recipes are all affordable which is ideal for everyone, not just students. Similar to the book above, most of the recipes serve 2 people so is great for students since you will have less food wastage. The only down side is that if you are someone that likes more adventurous meals this isn't the best book since the recipes are quick basic but this is sometimes ideal for someone who lacks complex cookery skills.

2). Veggie Lean in 15: 15-minute Veggie Meals with Workouts - Joe Wicks

This is a bit of a contrast in books since Joe Wicks focuses largely on healthy eating and workouts. I really like vegetarian foods so this is a great book for me but can also appeal to people who aren't vegetarian. Joe Wicks uses a variety of protein sources in his book like beans, pulses, nuts and cheeses. These are all fairly quick meals and it's great to encourage students to eat a variety of foods. Joe Wicks as aced a really good range of vegetarian foods with lots of different cuisines. The workouts at the back are also great since it's important for students keep active whilst studying. However, similar to the Lorraine Pascale book is that some of the recipes require quite a few ingredients which aren't always cheapest but you can substitute some ingredients with what you already have in your pantry.

1). The Roasting Tin: Simple One Dish Dinners - Rukmini Iyer

This is my no. 1 student-friendly recipe book! The Roasting Tin is a fab book for everyone as it is such an easy book to follow. The idea is that you simply place all the ingredients in a roasting tin and bake the ingredients in an oven. This is great since you don't need complex cookery skills to prepare these dishes, you just simply place them in the oven for about 30-50 minutes but they are all still healthy. The recipes are great for dinner but also for making lunches to bring to uni. and are all quite flexible for what you have left in your fridge or cupboards. Best of all, very little washing up! This book has a large variety of recipes for meat-lovers and vegetarians that are perfect for anyone.
